Fire Board expansion moving along
Item set for early December decision
The process for expanding the Kenwood Fire Protection District’s Board of Directors took a positive turn as the governing agency, LAFCO, slated the decision for Dec. 5. LAFCO, which stands for Local Agency Formation Commission, is a state-mandated county agency that oversees all special districts, including the KFPD. The seven-person LAFCO board has the sole authority to act on certain local special district issues – annexation, dissolution, expansion – under state law. Expanding an existing board is one of those issues.
On July 25, Dennis McIntosh, John Cooper, and Jim Kempers, the current board members, unanimously voted to add two new members to help with future decision-making for the growing department.
“The item will be attached to an annexation application that will be heard at the next regular meeting on Dec. 5,” said Mark Bramfitt, LAFCO’s executive director. “The commission will likely waive protest proceedings for the application, so Kenwood Fire could proceed as soon as we record the annexation.”
The two new members will be appointed by the directors 60 days after the LAFCO decision is recorded. Decisions are recorded after any applicable fees are paid. The precise process and dates will be announced later.
Two of the sitting Kenwood Fire Protection District board members have long histories with the Kenwood Fire Department, serving as volunteers and directors. Kempers spent 22 years as a volunteer and a captain, and taught First Aid and CPR.
McIntosh, who is running unopposed for another four-year term this year, served almost 20 years as a volunteer. He became a director after the untimely passing in 2002 of Ann Rudesill, who became the first firewoman in Sonoma Valley in 1983, serving in Kenwood, Rincon Valley and the State of California’s Fire Services.
John Cooper, the newest member, has an extensive background in construction.
The Board is preparing an outline of director’s duties and will begin accepting applications soon. The positions will be open to anyone who resides in the Kenwood Fire District.
