March 5 – “The Great Rivalry: Britain vs. France,” Dr. Bruce Elliott

For centuries of European history, the greatest national rivalry as well as the starkest cultural contrast was that between Great Britain and France. One was the model for representative government, the other for royal absolutism. One became the world’s greatest imperial and commercial center, while the other has long been the prime capital for style and the fine arts. Employing extensive visuals, historian and lecturer Elliott will highlight core differences between the British and French character and demonstrate how these differences have played out in cultural and political contrasts throughout history.

March 12 – “Search for the Next Music Director of the Santa Rosa Symphony,” Jim Hinton and Alan Silow

Who will be the next music director of the Santa Rosa Symphony after Maestro Ferrandis departs at the end of the orchestra’s 2017-2018 season? The Board of Directors appointed a Music Director Search Committee in Dec. 2015 to begin an international search to find the right person to raise the Santa Rosa Symphony’s (SRS) national profile as one of America’s leading regional symphony orchestras. Hinton, SRS past board president and chair of the music director search committee, aided by Oakmont resident Silow, executive director since 2002, will speak about how the process to date has unfolded, introduce the five candidates that have been selected, and discuss the next steps that will include community input into the final decision by the board in March 2018.
