Meet the candidates for sheriff
Thursday April 19th -On Thursday, April 19, the Oakmont Democratic Club will present a forum for the three sheriff candidates – Mark Essick, John Mutz, and Ernesto Olivares – to share their platforms and answer questions. It’s been 25 years since Sonoma County has had a contested race for this elected post. The forum provides the opportunity for voters to prepare for the June 5 primary election. If no candidate receives a majority, the top two vote getters will move on to the general election in November. Paul Gullixson, the Press Democrat’s editorial director, will serve as moderator.
Essick is administrative captain in the Sonoma Sheriff’s Office where he has served for more than 23 years. Mutz, a 25-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, retired with the rank of captain and station commander. He is currently a mediator and trainer with Wright Management. Olivares retired with the rank of lieutenant from the Santa Rosa Police Department after 30 years of service. He was mayor of Santa Rosa 2010-12 and currently serves on the City Council.
