Glen Ellen Fire public hearing for parcel tax Glen Ellen Fire Protection District

Tuesday May 21st - 7:30pm

Back in November, voters in the Glen Ellen Fire District (GEFD) easily approved Measure T, which allows the district to impose a tax of up to $200 per parcel for residential and lodging properties, up to $100 for agricultural and vacant parcels, and up to ten cents a square foot for commercial properties.

At its April meeting, the GEFD board of directors voted unanimously on a preliminary parcel tax amount that totals $150 for residential parcels, $75 for ag and vacant lands, and 7.5 cents a square foot for commercial.

According to GEFD board member Peter Van Fleet, 183 residential parcels where homes burned in the October 2018 fires would be treated as vacant parcels and allowed to pay a lower amount for the upcoming fiscal year starting July 1.

The district is required to hold a public hearing on the proposed tax amount and receive public testimony. That hearing is scheduled for May 21, 7:30 p.m. at the Glen Ellen Fire Station, 13445 Arnold Dr.

Van Fleet said that if the tax amount is finalized as proposed after the hearing, itís expected to generate about $240,000, which would be used in part to upgrade the fire station to current seismic standards, finance a third person to be able to go out on an engine during a call, and improve the sleeping quarters to make room for a third firefighter.
