Backpacking 101

Sugarloaf State Park

Saturday March 18 - 10:00am to

Interested in backpacking, but don’t know where to start? Local author and backpacking instructor Inga Aksamit will lead a three-hour, 10 a.m.-1 p.m, introductory class on backpacking on Saturday, March 18, at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Aksamit will review backpacking basics, look at examples of state-of-the-art backpacking gear, and bring a fully packed backpack, then unpack it so you can see what’s in it. The goal of the class is to introduce participants to modern backpacking techniques and equipment, which have generally reduced the weight that must be carried to enjoy a wilderness experience. If you have never backpacked before, or if it has been decades since you backpacked, or if you’ve read the book Wild and are inspired to start backpacking, this class is for you. Tips for all age groups will be provided, from backpacking with children to considerations for seniors. Cost $10.

Register on Brownpapertickets.com; search “Sugarloaf.”

To help participants apply what they learn in the classroom, Aksamit will also hold an on-the-trail backpacking overnight at Sugarloaf State Park May 6-7. Cost for the overnight is $75. Details can also be found on Brownpapertickets.com.
