Immigration focus of Sonoma Speaker Series

Hanna Boys Center

Monday June 2017 - 7:00pm to

The next event in the Sonoma Speaker Series is an in-depth discussion of cross-border immigration with National Public Radio (NPR) reporter John Burnett and Sonoma Police Chief Bret Sackett, on June 12.

The discussion will take place at the Hanna Boys Center auditorium. There is a VIP reception at 5:45 p.m., with the program starting at 7 p.m.

Burnett is based in Austin, Texas, and has been covering the border for over 20 years. He has followed the heartbreak of coyote smuggler victims as they struggle across the desert, the many controversies surrounding the border patrol, and the immigration policies of the Obama administration and now the Trump administration. He recently walked the border with Lulu Garcia-Navarro, NPR weekend host, and answered questions from NPR listeners about the fine points of immigration law and the operation of the Border Patrol.

Chief Sackett is responsible for all aspects of law enforcement services in both the City of Sonoma and the Sonoma Valley. This includes community programs, crime prevention strategies and initiatives, personnel selection, and budget preparation, to name a few. He has provided countless community presentations on a variety of topics, generally focusing on public safety and youth engagement. He recently completed a Train the Trainer course in “Racial Profiling and Bias-Based Policing,” and is well-versed in the challenges facing the local Hispanic population and immigration control.

VIP tickets are $75, general admission is $35. To buy tickets, go to www.sonomaspeakerseries.com.

Hanna Boys Center is located at 17000 Arnold Dr. in Sonoma.
