Special outing at Calabazas Creek

Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve

Saturday September 2017 - to

On Sept. 23, join naturalists from the Sonoma Ecology Center in welcoming fall with an exploration of the Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve in Glen Ellen. The preserve, which is currently only accessible to the public on guided outings, is known for its stunning vistas, open meadows, waterfalls, and oak woodlands. Calabazas Creek provides hikers with a multitude of micro-climates as well as a rigorous hike. Hike runs 9 a.m.-3 p.m., so bring along friends and family, and a picnic lunch to enjoy.

The Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve was purchased by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District in October of 2004 for recreation and preservation of its natural resources, including the stretch of Calabazas Creek that cascades down the canyon. The 1,290-acre property, overlooking the Valley of the Moon, is one of the most exquisite natural sites in Sonoma Valley and contains a wide array of habitats and breathtaking vistas.

This is a strenuous five- to six-hour hike with substantial elevation gain on established trails. Please bring water and lunch, and be prepared for that day’s weather. There is a shallow water crossing. Unless there is heavy rain between now and Sept. 23, you should be able to cross easily without getting your feet wet. The hike will go on in light rain, but heavy rain will cancel. This outing is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the District’s work with a quarter-cent sales tax.

This is a free event but requires online reservation by 5 p.m. on Sept. 22. Go to www.sonomaopenspace.org.

Directions and day-of contact information will be emailed upon registration. For more information or questions, contact Holland Gistelli at 996-0712, ext. 108 or holland@sonomaecologycenter.org.
