Fathers’ Day Music at Kenwood Community Church

Kenwood Community Church

Sunday June 17th 2018 - 10:30am to

On Sunday, June 17, the Kenwood Community Church is will present a special Fathers’ Day program at its 10:30 a.m. service. Come listen to musicians interweaving two powerful instruments – the organ and the trumpet – and enjoy the grand acoustics of the 130-year-old church located at Channing Row and Warm Springs Road, across from Kenwood Plaza Park.

Organist Harold Julander and trumpet player David Green have prepared a program showcasing how well these two instruments work together: “Trumpet Voluntary in D Major” by Jeremiah Clarke; “The Church’s One Foundation” by James Curnow, in which the organ accompanies the trumpet lead; “Ave Maria” from “The Well Tempered Clavier” (first Prelude in C Major) by J. S. Bach/Gounod; and “Sleepers Awake: (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimee)” by J. L. Krebs (one of Bach’s students; 1713–1780), in which the trumpet plays the hymn tune while the organ does a highly ornate Baroque accompaniment.

Green is a highly accomplished musician who, at age 16, has already been accepted twice to the National Youth Orchestra 2 (NY02) by Carnegie Hall and its Weill Music Institute, one of only four trumpet players nationwide who were selected for this year’s program.

Julander was organist at the Church of the Incarnation in Santa Rosa for 30 years, then music director at the First United Methodist Church in Napa before coming to Kenwood Community Church last year. He is a member of the American Guild of Organists.
