Music at Oakmont presents Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale

Oakmont Berger Center

Thursday December 13th 2018 - 1:30pm to

Music at Oakmont is delighted to present the highly acclaimed Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in a production of Igor Stravinsky's theater piece The Soldier's Tale. This charming but seldom-performed work will be an Oakmont premiere, and will take place on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 1:30 p.m. in Oakmont's Berger Center.

The Soldier's Tale was written at the end of World War I when the composer was stranded in Switzerland and unable to access funds in either his native Russia or his more recent home in France. The idea was to create a work that could be mounted simply in small towns and villages within Switzerland, to raise much-needed income. The Soldier's Tale involves an unusual assortment of seven instruments (including percussion), a conductor, a narrator, and a dancer. The story, a Faustian adventure, is from an old Russian anthology. As in all good folk tales, the moral is clear: if you make a deal with the devil, sooner or later you will regret it.

Immediately following this event, the audience is invited to a birthday celebration for Bob Hayden, Music at Oakmont's illustrious founder. For further details about this concert, including program notes, please visit www.musicatoakmont.org.
