Oakmont East Rec reopens May 1

Oakmont’s East Recreation Center, which has been closed for an extensive remodel, reopens on Wednesday, May 1, with a 3:30 p.m. ribbon cutting.

The project began after discovery that a deck overlooking the swimming pool was rotted and unsafe. The deck was closed, and planning began for a project that eventually included shutting down the entire two-story building for remodeling at a cost of up to $2.8 million.

While the building is reopening, the pool and spa will remain closed for about three more weeks while equipment converting them to salt water has time to adjust.

New artwork was installed in the second floor meeting area during March. Sixteen paintings were donated by local artists. Art in the raised ceiling at the center of the building was purchased to comply with a city requirement that renovations and new buildings include public art.

Several groups displaced during the project are to be contacted by OVA starting in mid-April about dates to return from temporary space elsewhere in Oakmont.
