Village Chat

I just found out about another Maria Carrillo High School grad. Bobby Jepson is going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to study Landscape Architecture. Cal Poly is probably the best educational value you'll find anywhere. You pay CSU tuition rates (as opposed to UC or private school tuition), get to live in an absolutely beautiful part of California, and attend one of the best schools in the entire country. No wonder it's so hard to get into! Congratulations, Bobby!

We got an update from Carol Vernal, a Glen Ellen-Kenwood Rotarian who spends about half the year in Nepal. Carol is a nurse and the founder of Children's Medical Aid Foundation, which provides corrective surgeries for congenital birth defects, burns and injuries. She also has been working on earthquake relief efforts for the past two years, specifically rebuilding schools. When children have no place to go during the day, they are at risk for all kinds of abuse.

Carol writes, “I was able to visit the village school that Glen Ellen-Kenwood Rotary helped provide earthquake relief support for. It was a wonderful experience meeting the children of Nya Goan School knowing that together we have helped to secure their future. The hope is that the government will replace the TLC buildings with permanently constructed schools sometime in the future. Meanwhile libraries are being established in each school to encourage good reading habits and stimulate the educational process with donations through Children's Medical Aid Foundation. Thank you, fellow Rotarians, for being part of this most worthy project.”

The great thing about donating money to Carol's organization is that she personally oversees how the money is spent. To find out more, go to www.childrensmedaid.org.

Right now, Kenwood Market is donating three percent of all deli and dairy sales to Kenwood School. Just ask for the program when you check out at the register. Thanks, Sam and Lakhwinder! The market is also doing its summer BBQ out in front on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10:30 .a.m. to 3 p.m. all summer long, so stop by and pick up some 'cue.

Stephen Hom reports that Oakmont pickleball players had a very good showing at last month's Sonoma Wine Country Games, for athletes age 50 and older. Stephen says, “There were eight pickleball players that represented Oakmont and three of the players brought home gold. An excellent win ratio in anyone's eyes, particularly for a sport that just recently started in Oakmont. Not only is pickleball growing by leaps and bounds in Northern California, but it is estimated that there are over two million people playing the sport today and that by 2018 there will be over eight million players nationwide.” What Stephan modestly forgot to say is that the gold medalists were Audrey Sherfey, Joan Seliga, and Stephen himself. Joan and Stephen won for mixed doubles, and Audrey and a pickleball partner won the women's doubles. Congratulations!

The games had 150 registered pickleball players, the maximum number they could accommodate at the Finley Community Center in Santa Rosa. It was the second largest sport at the games, behind women's soccer with 250 participants.

Here's something you don't see every day - a glow worm. This picture was taken by Bill Myers, of 'Bill & Dave Hikes' and Funky Fridays fame. He saw it at Sugarloaf. Thanks, Bill!

That's all for now. Remember that we do not publish a July 15 issue of the Kenwood Press. We're packing up and heading out for some R and R! We'll be back in your mailbox on Aug. 1, and in the meantime, if you have an item for Village Chat, please email it to ann@kenwoodpress.com, or call 833-5155 (starting July 20 when we're back in the office) and chat me up! - AQP
