Staying safe during the holidays

By Daren Bellach, Kenwood Fire Department

The holiday season may be the most wonderful time of year. Unfortunately, it is the most common time of the year for residential home fires.

Decorations

Holiday decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. Please be smart this holiday season. Nearly half of holiday decorative fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source.

Trees

Never use a lit candle to decorate any tree. Make sure candles are at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Christmas trees should be at least three feet away from any heat source. When you choose a tree, make sure it has green needles and is freshly cut. Always cut off two inches at the base of the trunk for better water absorption. Make sure you check water levels daily. As soon as you notice dry needles, promptly dispose of the tree.

Lights

When hanging lights for the holiday season, always inspect the cords for frayed wires. Hang your lights using approved hangers. Do not use nails. Use indoor lights indoors, and outdoor lights outdoors.

Smoke alarms

This is the perfect time of year to check your smoke alarms. Change out any old or dead batteries. Since most fatal fires occur at night, it is essential that every home have a working smoke alarm to provide early warning.

Santa is coming

Come by the fire station on Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. sharp! Santa will be arriving on a fire engine, ready to see all the girls and boys. He will still have time to take any last minute gift requests and is always ready to take a photo with you. We will have refreshments and candy canes.

From all of us at Kenwood Fire District and Kenwood Firefighters’ Association, we wish you the happiest and safest of all holiday seasons.
