Earth Day activities

Earth Day is Saturday, April 22, and there are plenty of projects and activities around our area for those of you looking to celebrate mother nature.

Happy Earth Day Celebration & plant sale

It’s fun for the whole family at Quarryhill Botanical Garden’s Happy Earth Day Celebration, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be arts and crafts, games, face painting, bubbles, Lion Dancers, animals, fire engines and more. This is your special chance to obtain very rare plants at affordable prices at the once-a-year-only plant sale. Admission is free. Parking $10, cash only. Pets are not allowed in the garden, nor in parked cars at Quarryhill, so please leave your pets at home, to ensure their comfort and safety. Quarryhill Botanical Garden is located at 12841 Sonoma Hwy. in Glen Ellen.

Sonoma Earth Day Festival

Hosted by First Congregational Church in Sonoma, this is a local, grassroots celebration of Earth Day featuring conservation information, advice on green home cleaning and garden weed control, activities for children, Farmers Market produce, drumming and other music, and food to buy. The festival is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn outside of Burlingame Hall, 252 W. Spain St., Sonoma. Visit sonomaecologycenter.org for info.

Nathanson Creek volunteer cleanup

The Sonoma Ecology Center’s restoration team is putting together a volunteer cleanup effort at Nathanson Creek Preserve. Events are fun and rewarding for everyone who loves this fish-friendly stretch of waterway and wants to help keep it clean. Visit sonomaecologycenter.org for info.

Trail Work at Sugarloaf

Team Sugarloaf, in partnership with the California State Parks Foundation, is holding a workday at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park to repair lower Brushy Peaks Trail. This volunteer effort is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit sugarloafpark.org.

Van Hoosear wildflower walk

These free wildflower walks are wildly popular, and one of them falls on Earth Day. Those wishing to take part are encouraged to register as soon as possible by going to vhwildflowerwalks2017.brownpapertickets.com.

People’s Climate March

350.org and other climate justice groups are organizing this nationwide march with various local iterations, including one in Sonoma Plaza. The march is Saturday, April 29, in front of City Hall. To register or for more information, go to 350.org.
