Steven A. Schwartz, 1943-2017

Steven Schwarz, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 17, 2017. He was an amazing husband, father and friend to so many, and will be greatly missed.

Steve leaves his wife Carolyn, the love of his life and best friend for 54 years. They have two children, Jennifer Schwarz of Cotati and Susan Pryfogle of Glen Ellen. They have one grandchild, Hannah Pryfogle of Boston, Massachusetts. He is survived by his sister, Sylvia Banks of Sunnyvale, and several nieces and nephews.

Steve was born on Jan. 24, 1943, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Kurt and Helga Schwarz after they had fled Nazi Germany. He moved to New York City as a small child and later settled in Berkeley.

Steve worked in the wholesale college book business for over 50 years, retiring in 2016 from MBS after over 35 years of service.

Steve was a fighter, beating lung cancer over 20 years ago and again four years ago, and surviving a triple bypass just two years ago. He had an amazing will to live and an incredibly positive outlook on life. He loved walking his dogs Murphy and Puccini every day, doing work on his home in Glen Ellen, swimming laps in his backyard, making new friends, and attending social events throughout Sonoma Valley. He loved to travel, was an avid follower of local and national news, and was fascinated with meeting new people and hearing their stories. He loved spending his evenings with Carolyn, binge watching through Netflix.

Steve was known for his humor and quick wit. He was a master of the pun and relished getting reactions from his family and perfect strangers alike.

He was very proud of his family and loved to brag about their accomplishments. He loved collaborating with Carolyn on her business, Wrap Yourself Up, selling handmade wraps in several boutiques throughout Wine Country. His daughter Jennifer is a recent graduate of the culinary program at Santa Rosa Junior College and is fulfilling her dream of being a baker. His daughter Susan owns the Tri-Tip Trolleys and is opening her first restaurant with her husband Andrew, TIPS Roadside in Kenwood. He took much joy in seeing his granddaughter Hannah graduate from Emerson College in Boston last year and was a great encourager of her pursuits in musical theater.

Steve loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was incredibly generous, loved and valued people of all walks of life, was moved by art and culture, and was inspired by the human spirit and accomplishment.

In his memory, take a walk in a local park, hug someone, pay it forward and tell a funny joke.
