Search is on for Oakmont dog park location

A location for a fenced-off dog park in Oakmont, to replace the now off-limits, privately owned polo field near Wild Oak, is being sought by a five-member committee of residents.

The Oakmont Board appointed them on Feb. 20 as an ad hoc committee headed by Paula Lewis, who took up the issue after polo field owners made the field off-limits for dogs in favor of increased use by polo pony owners.

Serving with Lewis are Richard Myers, Judy Myers, Karen Palmiotti and Gordon Freedman. Director Greg Goodwin was appointed the board’s liaison to the committee.

The Trione family, owners of the field, have offered $25,000 toward construction of a dog park, if details including a suitable location can be worked out.

Lewis said the group will look at several locations, talk with city and health officials, and do a cost analysis, as well as reporting to the OVA directors.

Board President Gloria Young told the Feb. 20 meeting that she plans to move from Oakmont, relocating in a couple of months to an apartment with an indoor pool. Young, whose term ends in April, is not seeking re-election.

The board acted to fill the remaining weeks of resigned member Ken Heyman’s term by appointing one of nine candidates in this year’s election, Wayne Van Bockerman. The vote was 4 to 2, with Young and Kathleen Connelly voting no.
