New slate sweeps to win in OVA election

Five new board members were swept into office by wide margins in the Oakmont Village Association’s recent election. Three directors seeking re-election and one new candidate were rejected by the voters.

Elected to full two-year terms were Steve Spanier, with 1,293 votes, Tom Kendrick, 1,205, and Marianne Neufeld, 1,099. Elected to one-year terms to replace directors who resigned were Al Medeiros, 1,108, and Heidi Klyn, 823. Seeking re-election were Lynda Oneto, with 723 votes; Karen Oswald, 667 votes, and Wayne Van Bockern, 610 votes. The new candidate, Dennis Boaz, received 754 votes.

At an April 3 organizational meeting following the election, Spanier was elected president of the board and Tom Kendrick vice president, both unanimously. Neufeld was the unanimous choice as secretary. A non-board member who had served earlier as treasurer, Elke Strunka, was appointed to that post on a 5-2 vote.

Spanier said the new board is “humbled by the trust and faith you have placed in us and promise to do our best to continually earn that trust in all our thoughts, words and actions.” He added that if there is one thing in the community he could change right away “it would be that prior to communicating with our neighbors, we all ask ourselves: ‘Can this message be delivered in a more kindly manner?’ If the answer is yes, I would wish for us all to reconsider and reconstruct our communication until it meets this criteria and voice it only then.”

“A divided community,” he added, “cannot be governed effectively, no matter the leadership.”

Kendrick, in written statement to the Kenwood Press, said he believes “the OVA board is most effective and successful when it listens to its members and keeps them informed about what is going on,” and he “looks forward to working closely with both former and current members of the OVA board, the dedicated OVA staff and the many hard-working volunteer committees that make Oakmont such a great place to live.”

The board voted 5-2 to replace the Reserve Study Committee with one comprised of the president, vice president and OVA Manager Kevin Hubred. An existing Reserve Study Committee and the Central Park Committee were disbanded by a 4-2 vote. Spanier did not vote. All other standing committees remain in place.
