Wild Collections, Expeditions for Education

Quarryhill Botanical Garden

Saturday May 18th 2013 - 5:30pm to

According to a recent study conducted by U.C. Berkeley, just 10 percent of elementary schools in California provide regular hands-on science, and 40 percent of elementary school teachers say they spend an hour or less teaching science each week. Children today are not spending as much time outdoors as previous generations and they are growing up knowing less about nature, plants and their importance to our survival, as well as issues such as conservation and sustainability.

Last year, Quarryhill Botanical Garden in Glen Ellen, along with other local organizations, brought more than 1,000 Sonoma County students into the garden for hands-on science education, but with nearly 72,000 students in the county, they have just scratched the surface. In an effort to expand this program, Quarryhill will be hosting its first annual fundraiser for education: “Wild Collections, Expeditions for Education,” on Saturday, May 18 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Enjoy champagne and a cart ride through bowers of flowering dogwoods, roses, irises and rhododendrons to reach the main event featuring live jazz, cocktails and an Asian-inspired dinner. The evening will conclude with a presentation by world-renowned botanist, Dr. Peter Raven, President Emeritus of Missouri Botanical Garden, about the importance of educating our children about nature, followed by a brief Fund-a-Need to benefit Quarryhill’s education program.

Ticket are $125 for members and $145 for non-members. Space is limited. Call 996-3166. Quarryhill Botanical Garden is located at 12841 Sonoma Hwy., Glen Ellen.
