Chris Smith to speak at Sunday Symposium

Oakmont East Recreation Center

Sunday April 12th 2015 - 10:30am to

The Oakmont Sunday Symposium provides a forum for speakers on diverse topics such as science, history, politics, culture and current events. Attendance is intended for Oakmont residents and their invited guests. Symposiums take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Sundays at the East Rec Center, 7902 Oakmont Dr.

There is no symposium on Easter Sunday, April 5.

On April 12, Press Democrat columnist and reporter Chris Smith will be on hand. Smith readily concedes that the printed, home-delivered daily newspaper is about as outmoded and inefficient as a steam locomotive. Yet with all the developments in digital technology and social media, the means of generating enough revenue to maintain a staff of reporters and editors without including the print model have yet to be discovered.

Smith will share some perspective on the current state of printed newspapers and of the efforts to expand successfully into social media and other non-traditional venues. And he will have a few interesting and enlightening stories to tell about what he considers his dream job.
