Public meeting on future of Calabazas Creek Preserve

Dunbar School

Wednesday October 21st 2015 - 6:00pm to

The future of Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve will be discussed at a public meeting hosted by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District (District) on Oct. 21 at Dunbar Elementary School in Glen Ellen. The meeting will run from 6 to 8 p.m.

The District, which purchased the 1,600-acre Calabazas Creek property near Nunns Canyon Road in 2004, has developed a Resource Management Plan, the first step in a long-range planning effort. The meeting will discuss this plan, along with the natural and cultural resources identified within the preserve, and highlight the next steps proposed for the property. These steps include developing a plan for public access and a four- to six-mile trail segment that could link up as part of the greater Bay Area Ridge Trail. Since 2004, the District has only offered access to the property via docent-led outings. Additionally, the District would like to develop an Operations and Maintenance Manual to guide the stewardship of the preserve. Over the years, the District has coordinated a dedicated group of volunteer patrollers and various partners to implement a range of management activities, including erosion control, invasive plant management, and the removal of illegal marijuana grows.

Originally, the District intended to transfer the Preserve to the California Department of Parks and Recreation (State Parks). For a variety of reasons, including limited access and lack of available public funding to manage such a large property, the District was unable to negotiate an agreement to transfer the property.

The meeting will seek public input on the Resource Management Plan and the future of the Calabazas property.
