Stradivari violin in spotlight at Oakmont concert

Making their Oakmont debut at the Berger Center on Dec. 10, violinist Frank Almond and pianist William Wolfram will present a program of music with historic connections to the “Lipinski” Stradivari violin, a glorious 300-year-old instrument played by Almond. The works include Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata, Bach’s Chaconne, Amanda Röntgen-Maier’s Sonata in B Minor, and Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata.

Almond holds the Charles and Marie Caestecker Concertmaster Chair at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He returned to the MSO following positions as Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Guest Concertmaster of the London Philharmonic. A member of the New York chamber group An die Musik, Almond founded and directs the acclaimed Frankly Music chamber series in Milwaukee. At 17 he was a prizewinner in the Nicolò Paganini Competition in Italy, and later was one of two American winners of the Eighth International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

Pianist William Wolfram is a silver medalist of both the William Kapell and the Naumburg International Piano Competitions, and a bronze medalist at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. He has performed with many orchestras internationally, and has developed a special reputation as the rare concerto soloist who is equally impressive as recitalist, accompanist, and chamber musician. For the Naxos label he has issued four discs in his series of Liszt opera transcriptions for solo piano, as well as two chamber music CDs. With Marin Alsop and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, he has recorded the piano concertos of Edward Collins on the Albany label.
