Joel Fan is celebrated for his exuberant virtuosity as well as a bold repertoire that embraces piano classics and inspired discoveries of contemporary and world music. As a soloist, Fan has performed over 40 different concertos with orchestras worldwide, including the New York Philharmonic, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Odessa Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony, and London Sinfonietta, with conductors such as David Zinman, Zubin Mehta, Alan Gilbert, and David Robertson. He has been featured on four continents, most recently in tours of China, Cuba, and South America. Fan is also recognized for his work with cellist Yo-Yo Ma as a member of the Silk Road Ensemble, appearing at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Born in New York City to Taiwanese parents, Fan began early musical studies at The Juilliard School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard, followed by a Master of Music degree in piano performance from the Peabody Institute. He is a winner of the Busoni International Piano Competition in Italy and the Kosciuszko Foundation’s Chopin Prize, and was named a Presidential Scholar by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.

For his Oakmont recital on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 1:30 p.m. in Berger Center, he has chosen a compelling mix of works by Alberto Ginastera, the Chinese composers Peixun Chen and Jianzhong Wang, and Franz Liszt (the beloved Sonata in B Minor).
