Hike for fitness, fun at Jack London State Park

Jack London State Park

Saturday June 18th 2016 - to

Hiking for Fitness classes start at Jack London State Park on June 18, with seven dates in June, July and August. This series is designed to help you get fit, while making new friends and having fun. Learn the basics of hiking and how to get the most from your hike, plus how to use yoga and mindfulness to enhance your outdoor experience. Each week the class will gradually increase the length and difficulty of the guided hike up to the last week, when hikers will celebrate at the top of the park.

The benefits of a good hike, physically and mentally, are incredible: improved cardio-respiratory fitness, improved muscular fitness, lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, lower risk of high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, lower risk of high cholesterol and triglycerides, lower risk of colon and breast cancer, and possibly lung and endometrial cancer, increased bone density or a slower loss of density, reduced depression and better quality sleep, lower risk of early death (if you are active for seven hours a week, your risk of dying early is 40 percent lower than someone active for less than 30 minutes a week), and weight control (hiking burns up 370 calories an hour for a 154-pound person).

Sign up for classes that fit your schedule or sign up for all seven classes. Class sizes are limited so don’t wait.

Hikes start at 8:30 a.m. and will end around 11 a.m., although ending time may vary with hike. Meet in the ranch parking lot (turn right as you enter the park). Each hike costs $15, which includes parking, or sign up for all seven classes for $90, which includes parking. Sign up at www.jacklondonpark.com.
