More Joy at Oakmont’s Berger Center
Friday April 2017 -
Folk music is coming to Oakmont in the form of the band More Joy! on Friday, April 21, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Berger Center.
If you like great fiddle playing, good lead singing with vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar, bass and keyboard, this is your type of concert.
Band members and Oakmont residents Iris Harrell and Ann Benson first met 38 years ago in Dallas, Texas, at a National Organization for Women monthly meeting where local feminist musicians would entertain the gathering of women. After seeing each other perform, Ann and Iris quickly became a duo, musically and personally, and called themselves “More Joy.”
They moved to Northern California in 1985 and built a design/build remodeling company in Silicon Valley. After 30 years of growing and running a sizable construction company, Iris retired and suggested More Joy come to musical life again. Now a five-piece folk music band, More Joy has used Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion model of personal stories and musical themes for their format in their concerts, only their stories are all true, and apply to the human condition in which we all find ourselves.
Tickets to the April 21 concert are $10, with proceeds benefitting the Oakmont Community Foundation. Tickets can be reserved in advance by going to www.oakmontboomers.org, or at the Oakmont Village Association office.
