Pulitzer Prize-winning author to speak at Quarryhill in Glen Ellen

Glen Ellen’s Quarryhill Botanical Garden will host the second annual Peter H. Raven Lecture Series beginning on July 8 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheater of the main garden.

This first of a three-part lecture series will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jared Diamond, professor of Geography at U.C.L.A., who will discuss “Plants, the Key to Civilization.”

Diamond will explain the development of agriculture, beginning around 10,000 years ago, and how it launched the development of civilization, including writing and government. Agriculture – the domestication of wild plants – arose only in certain places and at different times around the world, because only a tiny fraction of all wild plant species have proved suitable for domestication. Diamond will discuss why that is so.

Diamond began his scientific career in physiology and expanded into evolutionary biology with research interests in biogeography, geography and human society. He teaches classes in world regions and past societies and is the author of The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn from Traditional Societies, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, and the acclaimed Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize as well as Britain’s 1998 Rhone-Poulenc Science Book Prize.

The fee for the lecture is $35 for members, $45 for nonmembers. Refreshments will be available. Sign up for all three lectures (the others are Aug. 26 with U.C. Berkeley ecologist John Harte; and Oct. 13 with best-selling author Andrea Wulf.) For information and to buy tickets, go to www.quarryhillbg.org/page131.html.

Quarryhill Botanical Garden is located at12841 Sonoma Hwy. in Glen Ellen.
