Jud Goodrich retirement concert

Jack London State Park

Saturday August 19th 2017 - 2:00pm to

To everyone who has enjoyed a Jack London Piano Club concert, Jud Goodrich the founder and volunteer extraordinaire, will be retiring after 26 years of dedication to the Piano Club, the park and Charmian’s piano. We will sorely miss his inspiration and enthusiasm, plus his joyful piano playing and singing.

You are invited to a special concert and sing-a-long as we pay tribute to our beloved Jud. Come and say, “Thank you, Jud, for the memories!” The concert will be on Aug. 19, 2 to 4 p.m. at the House of Happy Walls Museum.

Each piano concert is performed on the 1901 Steinway grand piano purchased by Jack London in 1910 for his wife, Charmian. She was an accomplished pianist and played the piano throughout her lifetime. The Model A Steinway grand piano sat silent after Charmian London died in 1955, until 1988 when Park Rangers Greg Hayes and Matt Atkinson decided it should be played again. Park Volunteer Leslie Goodrich suggested her husband Jud launch the Jack London Piano Club. Martin Andrews, a Steinway technician, tuned and upgraded the piano and it is now a well-maintained, magnificent instrument.

Beginning with a core group of five volunteer pianists, the Club has flourished and now has 25 pianists who regularly provide musical entertainment for visitors in the House of Happy Walls Museum every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Since 2011 the Piano Club has presented quarterly concerts, raising over $15,000 to benefit operations at the Park.

Admission is free, although the parking fee still applies. Limited seating available. Performance space can be reached only by stairway; for more information about access, please call 938-5216.
