March 18 – “Joe Rosenthal and the picture that changed America,” by Tom Graves

On Feb. 23, 1945, civilian Joe Rosenthal accompanied Marines to the summit of Mt. Suribachi, a 550-foot tall volcano riddled with enemy artillery that rained carnage down on the Marines. That day, Rosenthal took the most significant, recognized and reproduced photograph of all time, raising the flag on Iwo Jima. Tom Graves will describe the flag-raising, the battle leading up to it, and the impact of the photo on the American homefront in 1945 and continuing to this day.

Graves is an author and professional photographer who in 2001 began photographing and interviewing veterans of WWII and Korea. In 2013, he published Twice Heroes, an award-winning book including 98 of his nearly 300 interviews and portraits.

March 25 – “Health Policy, The ACA, and Universal Health Care,” by Nick Anton

Dr. Nick Anton will explain why health care in the United States is so expensive, what the Affordable Care Act has accomplished, and what expanded Medicare for all (single payer) is. Anton is a member of Physicians for a National Health Program, was a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force, and practiced general internal medicine in Santa Rosa. With threats coming from Congress to reduce Medicare, this is a timely topic for all.
