V-O-Cal trailwork weekend at Hood Mountain

Hood Mountain Regional Park - Pythian Entrance

Friday May 18th 2018 - to

During the October 2017 wildfires, nearly 1,700 acres, or 50 percent, of Hood Mountain Park and Preserve burned. The damage assessment has been completed, and repair has begun. Repair to infrastructure is scheduled to be completed by spring or summer of 2019; however, the forests that burned, especially large areas cleared by bulldozers at Hood Mountain, will take years to recover.

Sonoma County Regional Parks has applied for FEMA grants to fund the repairs, but will also rely on volunteers to complete some of the work.

Over the weekend of May 18-20, you can volunteer one day or the entire weekend with Regional Parks staff and Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal). V-O-Calís project at Hood Mountain will involve a reroute of a previously steep, eroded section of the Nattkemper Trail. Volunteers will replace it with a hiker-friendly, sustainable trail on slopes just south of the summit. The new trail will run southeast of the existing alignment to rejoin the Nattkemper Trail about halfway between the summit of Hood Mountain and the stunning Gunsight Rock overlook. Tools, gloves, instructions, and food will be provided. Volunteers are welcome to camp onsite for free. Registration is required. No trail building experience is necessary. For more project details, a daily schedule, what to bring, to register and more, visit Volunteers for Outdoor Californiaís website at v-o-cal.org/projects/2018/mthood2018.html.
