Big picture look at civilization at next Sunday Symposium

Oakmont Berger Center

Sunday January 6th 2019 - 10:30am to

Oakmont’s Sunday Symposium meets every Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-noon, at the Berger Center. A $3 donation is suggested. All Oakmont residents and their guests are welcome. For more information, go to oakmontsundaysymposium.org.

The Sunday Symposium will be dark over the holidays, returning on Jan. 6 with “The Agricultural Revolution to the iPhone and Beyond” presented by John Freedman.

Dr. Freedman is an independent scholar and passionate world traveler who has explored over 150 countries. He is a highly sought-after guest lecturer on cruise ships and is an experienced expedition leader.

Freedman will complete his “Big History” odyssey that began with the Big Bang and took the audience through the increasing thresholds of complexity from pure energy to complex life forms. He’ll discuss the dawn of agriculture and early civilizations to modernity, finishing with a look at some new thresholds that carry the potential to change everything: artificial intelligence, extra-terrestrial colonization, gene-editing and more. All Oakmont residents and their guests are welcome.

Coming up:

Jan. 13 – “Ethical, Moral and Legal Dilemmas,” Eric Sinrod

Jan. 20 – “Why There is no Sex in Jane Austen,” Susan Morgan
