Naturalist program begins at Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf State Park

Thursday March 14th 2019 - to

If you enjoy exploring and learning about our local ecology, engaging in citizen science, and sharing your knowledge with others, check out the Sonoma Ecology Centerís California Naturalist Program.

The course combines a science curriculum with guest lecturers, field trips, and project-based learning to explore the unique ecology and natural history of the Inner Coastal Range of Sonoma and Napa. Local guest experts will attend classroom sessions and field trips utilizing the outdoor learning environment of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. The Spring 2019 course will emphasize the impact of the 2017 Nuns Fire on Sonoma Valley parks. Speakers include state park and Sonoma Ecology Center scientists and staff, retired State Senior Archeologist Breck Parkman, bioacoustics expert Bernie Krause, and retired Marin Open Space Lead Naturalist David Herlocker.

Program days and times are Thursday evenings from March 14 to May 16, 6-8:30 p.m., with the exception of week two which will be held on Wednesday, March 20. Evening classes meet at the Robert Ferguson Observatory at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. There will be five Saturday field trips held at various locations around Sonoma Valley including Sugarloaf and the Van Hoosear Wildflower Preserve. All fieldtrips are mandatory and run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with the exception of a Dawn Chorus recording from 5 to 7:30 a.m. on May 11, with optional overnight included the evening prior.

Fee for the course is $449. Need-based scholarships are available. Students must purchase The California Naturalist Handbook (2013, U.C. Press). U.C. California Naturalist Certificate will be awarded upon completion of course requirements.
