Art Show and Chamber Music

With the new Kenwood Community Club business plan in full flight, the weekend of July 25 and 26 saw the first annual art show entitled “Fine Art at the Depot.” Ten local artists exhibited art ranging from abstract oil paintings and water color landscapes to finely turned woodworking. Importantly, the show will be a recurring, annual event designed to present local artists in a pleasant and congenial setting.

Attendees bought art, listened to jazz guitar played by local legend Joel Kruzic, and sat in the shaded courtyard while sampling the ample refreshments.

“This is how we envision the Depot: providing a perfect backdrop to a true, community event. Not to mention the superb art produced by our very own regional artists,” said Morry Strauss, president of the sponsoring KCC. Strauss also discussed a recent grant provided by a county agency and pointed out some of the refurbishing activity currently being undertaken on the historic Depot.

In September the KCC will be commencing a grand experiment in becoming a major chamber music venue for regional classical music ensembles with the kick off of the “Fall/Winter Chamber Music at the Depot” series.

The series of Sunday afternoon concerts begins on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. with the famous Copeland Creek Brass performing a program ranging from opera transcriptions to New Orleans inspired jazz.

On Oct. 25, the Meltemi Winds, a renowned woodwind quintet, will play the Depot, and in November the old train station will be filled with the soaring sounds of the Sonoma Strings playing Bach, Vivaldi and some pop selections.

“Some of the participating musicians have marveled at the almost perfect acoustics of the Depot”, said Paul Kruzic one of the KCC board members responsible for producing the art show and the chamber music series. “The natural wood floors and the relatively small size of the room is exactly what is called for in these chamber music performances.”

An internationally known baroque ensemble, the Alphabet Baroque Club, will be presented in early January to welcome in the New Year, and a special Valentine’s Day concert (with performers and program to be announced) is also in the works.
