Summer is here

As I'm writing this (down to the wire) we've just had our first honest taste of summer. Phew! Memorial Day was a scorcher and, right on cue, I saw my first rattler of the season this weekend. Stay safe everyone, hike with sturdy shoes and keep your eyes and ears open. If you hear what sounds like an oscillating sprinkler, take a good look at your feet and watch your step! My surprise came as I was weeding around our greenhouse. The snake looked like it just bubbled up out of the hole made by the roots I was extracting - yikes!

This past weekend Glenellenites enjoyed the 26th annual fifth grade play at Dunbar Elementary School on the gorgeously rebuilt Haver Stage. The crowds were hefty, even on Friday night when the rain had put a damper on most of the day. On May 31, these same fifth graders will be walking on that very stage again, but this time for their promotion. My youngest leaves Dunbar this year; where has the time gone?! Recently high school seniors who are Dunbar alumni visited the school during “senior walkabout,” a SVUSD tradition now in its third year. The tears were flowing as the teachers greeted these grown students. I was able to catch up with several Glen Ellen students who will graduate on June 1, to find out what they have planned for “the next step.”

Isabel Eagles will be attending U.C. Berkeley in the fall. Molly Brown will be attending SRJC in the fall and is excited to play water polo as well as work on her pre-reqs to enter the nursing program at Dominican College. She works at TopThat Yogurt.
Molly Brown and Erica Lee
(L to R) Molly Brown and Erica Lee

Erica Lee moved to Glen Ellen in 2009 and started at Dunbar her fourth grade year. She played softball from fifth through eighth grade, but when she got to high school she wanted to try something new, and so her love for water polo began. She was the only graduating senior to have played all four years and competitively swam all four as well. She is going to be playing for SRJC along with Molly Brown. She presently has three jobs: stock runner at Sebastiani Winery, site supervisor and swim instructor for Swim America, and pool attendant at Parkpoint. Erica's recently completed senior project inspired her to choose a field in anthropology, with ethno-botany as her longterm focus. She chose the JC as a cost-effective way to pay for college since she plans to earn her BA in anthropology, then an MA and then her PhD.
Mary Litzenberg
Mary Litzenberg at Dunbar School during the SVHS graduates “walkabout.”

Mary Litzenberg will attend Cal State University Monterey Bay as a biology major. Her interest is in marine science, and she hopes to do research on sharks someday. Dean Dunham is excited to be graduating and intends to study at SRJC, as well as looking into military service.

Please pass along any additional college and career announcements to the paper and we will be happy to include them in upcoming columns.
